Hello from Arugula's Star Farm,

We are going to keep the New Annoncement posted in the weekly e-mail for the next couple weeks just to help remind everyone, and to help new comers.

If you need a reminder of how the On-Farm pick-ups work or if you need to remember how to order please click here to read about On-Farm pick-ups.
**Remember... you can only order by phone 931-682-3314 or fax 931-682-9175 **
**Please call in or fax orders this week by Thursday evening, as harvesting starts early on Friday**
Announcement... PLEASE READ... As we are moving into the cool Fall time of the year we have decided to permanently change the way pick-ups work here at the farm.  In the past, the selling season has ended around the first of November, but this year we are going to extend on-farm pick-ups until there is really nothing surving still in the garden. Generally, items can hang on really well till January, depending on the extremes of the cold weather.   Picking day, most normally, for the rest of the year will occur on Friday mornings.  Therefore, produce will be ready and placed at the ROCKET from 2:00pm on Fridays and will be available there all weekend, through Sunday.  This will give everyone a very large window of time to be able to swing by and pick-up.  This allows everyone to not have to abide to a 1 hour specific pick up time and it also keeps us from having to make alternative arrangements when the Thursday 1 hour pickup time does not work for the customer. We really appreciate the couple handfuls of people that have picked up this year and hope this can be beneficial to you all.

Available Organic Items for Friday Dec. 2nd through Sunday 4th On-Farm Rocket pick-ups:

As we have almost entered into the first of December, we have finally had some of the coldest low temperatures thus far.  It seems as the hardy vegetables are doing a good job at holding on, so we still have great greens and roots to offer.  The Broccoli has just started heading, so hopefully we will have enough poundage to fill some orders this week.  We are also going to have some young beet roots to offer as we have had our first helping, and Kohlrabi too.

All items are always on a first order first serve basis.

LAST CHANCE for pick-up before the Thanksgiving holiday.  Also, there will not be another pick-up till the weekend of December 2nd-4th, so make sure you order enough to stretch a little longer this time.   Moreover, as my grandmother has past, picking this week will need to be done on Thursday morning instead of Friday and therefore we will need to receive your order by late on Wednesday night or very early on Thursday morning for it to be counted in as an order.  Sorry for this quick push forward on the normal weekly ordering, but as this is an abnormal circumstance this is just what has to happen.

All items are always on a first order first serve basis.

It sure makes it hard to decide what to whip up for dinner when there are so many bright and vibrant green looking edible choices growing all in rows out in the garden.  As you will see, it seems like the greens options are unlimited below.  Before Thanksgiving, we are hoping to have some root crops availbale like Beets, Rutabagas, and Carrots.  We also should be expecting some Broccoli Heads here in the next couple of weeks.

We did try the Cardoons this week and they are fairly similar to the way that they are so described...tasting like a cross between artichoke, celery, and salsify, this interesting vegetable is very popular in France, Italy, and Spain. One only eats the stem as the outer green leafy part should be composted.  The stalk resembles a giant bunch of wide flat celery. To prepare cut the inner ribs into the size indicated by a recipe and soaked in acidulated water to prevent browning.  Cardoons can be boiled, braised, or baked.  Pre-cooking in boiling to simmering water for about 30 minutes is helpful before using in any recipe.  We had them after slow simmering  in water for 45minutes to 1 hour, after bringing to a boil. To get their true flavor we just had then with a thick saucy sautee of chopped leek, bell pepper, and celery with olive oil, white wine vinegar and salt and pepper.  They are very reminiscent to artichokes with a slightly bitter spin.

We said goodbye to the tomatoes finally with the 2-3 nights of 27 degree temperatures.  The Mikola Butterhead might show a slight bit of tip burn now as well.  The Dottenfelder cabbage plants and the Broccoli Plants are getting larger day by day as we speak.

We have not had many triers of the Radishes this year and a good word needs to be put out there for them.  We have been loving the radishes, they are juicy and mild and crunchy.  They are great to eat on Raw with a little salt and are really good for you to.  They are also really great to chop and saute.  We have been eating them daily and it seems like their bright skinned color can make for a good day.  We have been enjoying potato salad made with homemade "real" mayonnaise, radishes and toast sided with large bowls of green salads. We enjoyed the first Chinese Cabbage the other night and oh how they are delicious.  In fact, I made an asain dish that had Cabbage and Radishes in it placed over rice.   We also have for the first time ever Cardoon Stems.  I will be experimenting with their cooking procedure this week, so maybe you can to!

Good day to all.
As the end of summer comes approaching, we here have decided to head to the Eastern parts of TN to spend some good time with family.
We will be back and ready for harvesting by the Thursday Oct. 6th date.   This will give the needed time for the fall greens and roots to get a little bigger, so then we can start offering lettuce, radishes, baby greens, along with the summer items that still will be hanging on like summer squash, tomatoes, leeks, basil, and potatoes.
Enjoy the first days of Fall and we will be seeing you in a couple of weeks.

Thanks,
Allison and Matthew

I successfully hand dug the last potato out of the ground yesterday.  Since the Potato crop looked to to be such a good one this year, I decided to record how many lbs of potatoes that I dug up.  The grand total was right over 300 #s.  We could have had about 350 #'s I think but because the Desiree's are not long term storage potatoes they did not last in the ground as long as the All Blues or the Purple Viking, and some of the Desirees were lost to rot before I got to digging them all up. They are all out of the ground now and stored in baskets in our dark cool room, to keep as long as they will over winter.  Since the Desiree potatoes do not store as long I am going to only be offering them for the next while as to make sure they will get put into bellies and not the compost.
(**)The Okra has not really started producing heavy yet and as I only planted about 10 plants it is hard to say on a weekly basis how much will be available. You can request Okra, but it will be very questionable whether you will get any or not.
If all goes well it looks like we will finally have a good harvest of beets, and beet greens.  The two 200 ft rows that I planted for the fall have germinated to perfection, unlike what occurred this spring.  They are about an inch tall right now and in fact all of the fall crops that were planted on 21st & 22nd of August seem to be coming along to about that height..  It will probably be about 3 weeks before we will be having some young baby thinned out greens.
No eggs for this week we are sorry to say, as by the time we have eaten eggs and used them in cooking there will be none left for offer.
